EDEKA Minden-Hannover will consistently rely on German origin for pork in the future

EDEKA Minden-Hannover, through its production subsidiary Bauerngut, is further advancing regional value creation in pork: In the coming weeks, the pork range under the Bauerngut brand will be gradually converted to the 5D standard. A significant proportion of poultry and beef is already sold as 5D products. The company announced this at the Green Week trade fair in Berlin.

“The goal is to anchor the entire pork value chain even more firmly in Germany. This strengthens domestic agriculture and simultaneously creates trust and provides guidance for our customers”, says Klaus Jeinsen, Managing Director of Bauerngut. “By expanding the 5D standard, we are consistently continuing our commitment to regionality and animal welfare”.

The 5D standard goes beyond simple origin labeling. It ensures that pigs are born, raised, fattened, slaughtered, and processed in Germany. This means the animals spend their entire lives – from birth to slaughter – in Germany. If this is the case, the respective product can be labelled with the “Good from German Agriculture” logo.

With this step, EDEKA Minden-Hannover is building on existing measures to improve animal welfare and sustainability. For 15 years, all products under the Bauerngut brand have come from meat raised in Germany (4D), predominantly from farms in Northern Germany. In 2021, Bauerngut also introduced husbandry system 2 as the minimum standard for pork and poultry and has continuously expanded its offerings in higher husbandry systems and regional programs – particularly for beef.
